Nielsen's latest report reveals a new record has been set as far as TV ad sales go in the US, which surpassed the US$ 70 billion mark.

According to marketingdirecto.com, the fact that this number was reached in a year with no major events such as the Olympics or the Presidential Elections is surprising. Yet, one of the main areas where ad spend increased the most is sports, where it grew 6% to 10.9 billion dollars.

Even when the data considered dates back only five years, ad spend in 2011 registered the highest growth percentage. Total ad spend in 2010 was US$ 68 billion; 8% higher than the previous year (US$ 63.7 billion).

As far as sports programming, TV ad spend grew 26% between October and September 2011, reaching 10.3 billion dollars.
