On June 20, 1971, Canal 8 in Mexico premiered El Chavo del Ocho. 41 years later and 20 years since its last episode, the show generated an estimated US$ 1.7 billion in syndication fees, according to Forbes.

El Chavo del Ocho, one of the most beloved shows created by Roberto Gómez Bolaños, continues to stay current across Latin America. Twenty years after its last episode premiere, the series is watched by close to 91 million people a day all over the Latin continent, according to an article recently published by Forbes magazine.
The show originally premiered on Canal 8 in Mexico. The channel then belonged to Mexican company Televisión Independiente, which later merged with Telesistema Mexicano to become the Televisa.
El Chavo del Ocho generated countless milestones in Latin America. For instance, with his show Chespirito managed to fill two football stadiums in Santiago de Chile, the Madison Square Garden in NY in 1983, and the Quinta Vergara stage.

Nowadays, El Chavo del Ocho is one of the five highest-rated shows in the US among children 6-11 and adults 18-34 through Galavision.
According to the article, since it ended back in 1992, the show generated over US$ 1.7 billion in syndication fees for Televisa. The show earns an average of US$ 1.3 million per episode.
These numbers don't even include the revenues obtained from marketing and other business, which generate close to US$ 24 million a year through licensing deals for clothing lines, shows, videogames and animation. The number will only get larger when the 3D movie -which is currently in pre-production- comes out in 2014.
