While everybody was speculating on which live sports event YouTube would venture into next, Google's video platform announced that it will broadcast all 26 matches of the upcoming Copa América tournament live. After the Cricket World Cup held in India (the platform's first experience in this area) YouTube will also broadcast goal compilations and highlights from the soccer tournament, held in Argentina this year on July 1-24.
The Copa America channel is already available at youtube.com/copaamerica. There, soccer fans will find a number of videos featuring highlights from the tournament's 2007 edition. YouTube acquired live broadcasting rights after signing an agreement with Traffic Sports.
Yet fans better not rush: even though YouTube announced the service will be available in over 50 countries, ttv confirmed that users from Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay -in addition to other countries such as Germany, Belgium and Canada- are not able to access the 2007 Copa América videos already uploaded on the site. Yet the content is available in Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain and the US. This makes sense since in most Latin American countries broadcasting rights have already been sold to different distribution companies and broadcasters but there is still a slight chance that this may change once this year's edition starts.
