The Satmex 8's beams will cover 48 contintental US states and territories from the Caribbean to Argentina.

Despite its financial difficulties, Satélites Mexicanos (Satmex) has proved it is still alive by undertaking this US$350 million challenge. This last Christmas weekend the operator closed an agreement with International Launch Services (ILS) to launch its satellite Satmex 8, which is being built by Loral Space. In a statement, the satellite operator recalled that the new satellite will work as a substitute for Satmex 5, which is close the end of its useful life.

15 year-old Satmex 8, designed to provide power levels similar to those of models 5 and 6, will cover 48 contintental US states and territories from the Caribbean to Argentina. The launch date aboard a Proton rocket is scheduled for July 2012.

US-based International Launch Services has its headquarters in Reston, Virginia. The company has exclusive worldwide rights for commercial sales and mission management of Russian rocket Proton. Baikonur’s Cosmodrome will serve as a launch base for the Mexican satellite.
