Despite its low ratings and disappointing results, Fox decided to renew Fringe for a fifth and last season. The reason is simple?

The announcement was made following a disappointing fourth season with ratings that continued to drop as audiences dropped as low as 2.5 million viewers. Terra Nova, recently cancelled by Fox drew in between 9.2 and 7.2 million fans.
In fact, Fox reps revealed a few months back that Warner Bros' Fringe was actually causing the network to lose money, something that didn't happen with Terra Nova.
So how does Fox justify its decision then? The thing is, this time, the network chose to look at the bigger picture: it found an alternative way to get back the investment and ultimately fell on its feet.
On the one hand, the series has a loyal fan base that, as small as it may be, wasn't going to forgive Fox for cancelling their favorite show.
Campaigns on social networks and piles of letters sent to Fox were some of the strategies fans used to take action. One cancellation wasn't going to affect the network's image.
On the other hand, with an additional 13 episodes, the series would hit the 100 mark, granting both Fox and Warner syndication as a way to get back some of the money invested over the last 4 years.
Or maybe, it was just something Reilly himself felt like doing as a devoted fan of the series who chose to renew it every year since it first aired.
Fringe's executive producer and co-creator, JJ Abrams, said: "We are thrilled and beyond grateful that FOX-and our fans-have made the impossible possible: Fringe will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way. All of us at Bad Robot are forever indebted to our viewers and the amazingly supportive FOX network for allowing the adventures of Fringe Division to not only continue, but to resolve in a way that perfectly fits the show."

El anuncio se da luego de una mala cuarta temporada en lo que a ratings se refiere, con unas audiencias que nunca llegaron a superar los 3,5 millones de espectadores y que vieron mínimos de 2,8 millones. Terra Nova, recientemente cancelada por Fox, había tenido ratings entre 9,2 millones y 7,2 millones.
De hecho, desde Fox habían dicho meses atrás que Fringe, producida por Warner Bros., le generaba pérdidas a la cadena, algo que por otro lado no ocurría con la mencionada Terra Nova.
¿Cómo se explica entonces la decisión de Fox? En que esta vez la cadena optó por priorizar el panorama completo: encontró una vía alternativa para recuperar la inversión y su imagen salió fortalecida.
Es que, por un lado, la serie tiene una base fiel de seguidores que, aunque pocos, no le iban a perdonar a Fox la cancelación.
Campañas en las redes sociales, juntas de firmas y cartas y más cartas dirigidas a la Fox fueron algunas de las estrategias de los fans para hacerse oír. Una cancelación no iba a beneficiar en nada la imagen de la cadena.
Por el otro, con 13 episodios más, la serie llegará a los 100 capítulos, permitiéndole tanto a Fox como a Warner la sindicación y una manera de recuperar el dinero invertido estos cuatro años.
O, tal vez, sea un mero capricho del propio Reilly, fan declarado de la serie y que año tras año optó por su renovación contra todos los pronósticos.
El productor ejecutivo y co-creador de Fringe, J.J. Abrams expresó: "Estamos contentos y más que agradecidos que Fox - y nuestros fans - han hecho lo imposible posible: Fringe continuará una quinta temporada que permitirá a la serie concluir en una manera salvaje y emocionante. Todos nosotros desde Bad Robot estaremos siempre en deuda a nuestros televidentes y al canal Fox, que nos apoyó increíblemente, por permitirnos que las aventuras de la División Fringe no solo continuarán, sino también que se resuelvan en una manera que encaja perfectamente con el show".
