US company comScore publishes its latest study on internet consumption.

With the title 2012 US Digital Future in Focus, comScore published its latest study on internet consumption habits, exposing the latest trends and presenting key issues for this new year.

Social networks, smartphones, tablets. Internet users' habits are changing, and so are their devices. comScore predicts an "exciting" 2011 for the digital media industry, with new opportunities and challenges.

"2012 promises to be an exciting year for the digital media industry as the explosion of available content and proliferation of web-enabled devices drive the evolution of the digital consumer, creating new opportunities and challenges for the entire digital ecosystem," said Linda Abraham, comScore CMO and EVP of global product development.

"In order to be successful in this new paradigm, digital marketers must understand the key trends shaping the current marketplace and what that means for the future of their businesses," she added.

Trends seem to be quite clear. Online video grew exponentially in 2011: more than 100 million people in the US watch online videos every day, a number that represents a 43% increase in comparison to 2010.

As far as social networks go -with Facebook as the clear leader- social networking accounted for 16.6% of the minutes spent online by users in 2011.

Most of the mobile phone owners consumed media on their devices, which means they've ceased to be just phones. By the end of the 2011, 8% of all digital traffic was consumed through smartphones and tablets.

Due to all these facts, online ad sales also increased: US$ 4.8 trillion display ad impressions were registered in the US in 2011.

Last but not least, e-commerce grew in 2011. And as far as search engines go, Bing surpassed Yahoo!, and ranked second behind Google.
