Pay TV Continues to Grow in Brazil
 
The Latin American giant continues to add new pay TV subscribers, as Anatel's latest report reveals 13.7 million homes have access to the service, which grew 31.2% in the last year.
 
 
With over 355,900 new subscribers added in March 2012, Brazil ended the year's first quarter with 13.7 million homes with Access to pay TV. The numbers revealed by Anatel's latest report indicate a monthly growth of between 26.7% and 31.2% in comparison to March 2011. If you consider there's an average of 3.3 people in each household (IBGE, Brazilian Institue of Geography and Statistics), currently 45.13 million Brazilian people have access to pay TV.

The report also reveals the growth in pay TV subscribers in reference to the different technologies. And the winner is clearly DTH, with 56.6% of the total amount of subscribers. Cable reaches 41.8%. The year before, DTH accounted for 48.2% of the market and cable 49%.

This increase in satellite TV means 286,000 subscribers were added in March 2012: 3.8% growth in one month. Cable added 78,200 new subscribers (1.4% increase). Meanwhile, MMDS services lost 8.6 thousand subscribers (3.8%).

COMPETITION
Anatel's report also reveals Net/Embratel is the current market leader with 7.4 million subscribers, followed by Sky (4.1 million), Vivo/Telefónica (691,785), Oi (395,574), ViaCabo (99.338), Algar (98,152) and GVT (127,218).The remaining 672,466 subscribers are split between the remaining companies.

Either way, the interesting thing to remember is these numbers might change radically once the country's new pay TV law is established, as one of its main points is the competition between the players, meaning there will probably be some changes in the percentages and market shares.

Ese aumento de la TV vía satélite representa que en marzo de 2012 se sumaron 286,3 mil suscriptores, un crecimiento del 3,8% en un mes. El cable registró un aumento de 78,2 mil suscriptores en ese mes (aumento del 1,4%). Por su parte, los servicios de MMDS perdieron 8,6 mil suscriptores en el mismo período, lo que representó una caída del 3,8% de su base.

COMPETENCIA. Otro punto destacable del informe de Anatel tiene que ver con el porcentaje de mercado que tiene cada uno de los principales grupos económicos que prestan servicios de TV paga en Brasil.

Con 7,4 millones de suscriptores, el grupo Net/Embratel lidera el mercado. Le sigue Sky, con 4,1 millones. Luego se encuentra Vivo/Telefónica, con 691.785; Oi, con 395.574; ViaCabo, con 99.338; Algar, con 98.152; y GVT, 127.218. La suma de todos las demás compañías alcanza los restantes 672.466 suscriptores.

De todos modos, lo interesante será recordar estas cifras dentro de un tiempo no muy lejano, una vez que se materialicen las reglamentaciones que establece la nueva ley de TV paga en el país. Siendo uno de sus principales cometidos que haya verdadera competencia entre los players a nivel nacional, deberíamos comenzar a ver movimientos en esos porcentajes y una redistribución de las cuotas de mercado.
